WAU MEN’S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT
TAKOMA PARK, MD – This year, the Washington Adventist University men’s soccer program achieved an unprecedented milestone. Under the guidance of Coach Daniel Carroll, the team secured its first-ever entry into the CAC Conference Tournament and is now poised to compete in the National Tournament. With only two matches standing between them and the pinnacle of national competition, the team is gearing up for the semifinal clash against Bellevue.
In anticipation of the crucial match, the Shocks embarked on their journey to Georgia, departing from their headquarters at 5 AM on Tuesday. Despite the challenging road, Coach Carroll’s team maintained their energetic spirit. Joao Bruno, the season-long team captain, offered insights into the team’s preparation for the upcoming games. “Coach has meticulously planned our schedule to position us for success in the National Tournament,” Bruno said. “Though waking up at 5 AM is tough, the change in environment and the time spent with teammates empower us to push forward. We’ve been working as a family since August, and we are ready to showcase our best performance and bring home success.”
Thijs Vehldorst, hailing from The Netherlands, reflected on his freshman-year leadership role and the team’s adaptation to a new soccer system. “The pre-season set the stage for personal and team achievements, boosting my confidence and performance. Adapting to the rapid changes in college soccer was tough, but overcoming challenges related to ineligibility or injuries witnessed our resilience,” Vehldorst remarked.
Looking ahead, Vehldorst expressed his expectations for a solid defense in the upcoming matches. “Scoring against established teams has been our greatest challenge. Our readiness, motivation, and team chemistry will make the difference,” he added. On his future steps, Vehldorst stated, “This is just the beginning. My teammates inspire me daily, reminding me of my goals. While I know hard work lies ahead, being here is already a significant achievement.”
Post-game, however, the team faced disappointment as the WAU Shocks lost the Conference Semi-final against Bellevue, concluding their season in Georgia. Despite a spirited effort, the team couldn’t equalize the lone goal conceded in the last four matches. The players’ despair, fatigue, dedication, and determination, however, will be remembered. The men’s soccer team brought a wave of pride and interest to the sport, revolutionizing the soccer environment at Washington Adventist University.
Bartu Yakkan, a key player throughout the season, expressed his disappointment for the last game and provided tactical analysis. “Implementing the second-half style for the entire match could have been a strategy,” Yakkan suggested. “The lack of experience may have shown in crucial moments, leading us to respect our opponents too much. Nevertheless, I’m proud of the team’s hard work and the immense heart displayed on the field.”
Yakkan acknowledged the absence of senior leadership during high-pressure games but emphasized the team’s value on the field. Reflecting on the tournament, he said, “I learned not to take life for granted. Giovanni Batista’s inspirational last game and David’s injury situation made me realize the importance of cherishing every moment. We must be thankful for the privilege of pursuing our passion.”
Summing up the season, Yakkan highlighted the incredible friendships and bonds forged within the international team. “Embarking on this journey to the US with a group of guys from different backgrounds has been remarkable. It’s a testament to how collaboration can make history at this school,” Yakkan concluded.
The team’s head coach, Daniel Carroll, heralded the start of a new era following the past season’s conclusion.
“Today marks the end of a chapter, not the story,” Carroll said. “Our journey in this tournament has been a testament to the heart and resilience of a team that defied expectations. Though we ended this season with a tough loss, it’s merely a comma in our journey’s sentence.”
Carroll highlighted the team’s potential, underpinned by new talent and unity, which has sparked moments of brilliance throughout the season. He sees the season’s challenges as a foundation for future success.
“Our freshmen, warriors of this year, will grow into seasoned athletes. Each defeat and victory serves as a building block for the future,” he said.
Carroll’s vision extends beyond local achievements, aiming for a national presence.
“Next year, we aim to stand taller, play smarter, and push harder. Our impact will resonate nationally,” he said. “The lessons and experiences from this season will be our arsenal in our quest for greatness.”
He concluded with a forward-looking statement: “The journey continues. Today, we plant the seeds for tomorrow’s victories. Our ambition knows no bounds. Watch out for us; the Shock will be felt far beyond this tournament. Our story has just begun.”
