WAU Partners with Frederick Seventh-day Adventist Church On Inaugural Class of Field Evangelism
Takoma Park, Md. (March 19, 2019) Last fall, Washington Adventist University’s Department of Religion together with the Frederick Seventh-day Adventist Church developed an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience.
“I have always wanted to find a way to get college students to come to my church as ministry interns,” shared Morgan Kochenower, the Senior Pastor at Frederick SDA Church. “In hosting a field school class at the Frederick church for our Discover Jesus evangelistic series, I too learned a lot, and in fact, I learn better through experience and doing.”
Throughout five weeks, from Friday to Sunday, students met with Kochenower and his associate Pastors Kevin Kim, and Izzy Uribe. They took an active role in preparing for an evangelistic series being held at the time as well as other church functions. While Kochenower preached the bulk of the series, the students took turns presenting for the morning church services and assisting the church elders with visits to those who attended.
Classes, taught by the church pastors, covered the fundamentals of evangelism and preparing for evangelistic outreach. Their discussions centered on the true meaning of evangelism and the methods Christ employed to reach out to others. The students were trained on the importance of building relationships with church members, and visitors, and setting the right priorities to bring others into the kingdom of Christ.
“I can honestly say that this class has helped solidify the calling on my life,” expressed Che Burgess, Senior Theology Major.
Although the course, Class of Field Evangelism was the first of its kind, the hope is to offer this every year.
