WAU Students Make a Difference in Annapolis, Maryland

Takoma Park, MD. (February 19, 2019)

Washington Adventist University students joined 14 other independent higher learning institutions in Annapolis, Maryland, to participate in the Maryland Independent Higher Education Day.

The Maryland Independent College and University Association (MICUA) has maintained a partnership with Maryland’s independent colleges and universities for over 230 years providing grants, aid and advocating for 63,000 students. The support this organization offers has been instrumental in many of WAU’s most visible infrastructure projects.

Students spent part of the day visiting the offices of their delegates informing them of their financial needs and garnering attention for upcoming legislation. President Weymouth Spence walked the halls with the students offering support and guidance as many of the students stepped forward to voice MICUA’s needs.

“We spent time sharing the direct impact that state funding has had on our lives as students,” said Charles Vines, Master of Business Administration student, “and the impact it will have on our lives as future professionals.

State representative Jheanelle Wilkins indicated that she is interested in offering scholarships and bringing current and future WAU students to take part in state internships. She currently employs EvVeta Charles (a recent graduate of WAU) and is interested in how WAU students can play a larger role at the capitol.

The efforts made by MICUA in partnership with Washington Adventist University are designed to further the mission of offering high quality education to students across Maryland and enhancing what WAU can offer students into the future.
