The WAU soccer team recorded a 9-1 win in the home opener against Penn State Brandywine Sunday at the WAU Soccer Field. The Shock (2-0) had two players net goals and over 30 shots in the game to give WAU its 9-1 victory.

Head coach Krista Byrd Rodriguez ’11 returned to the WAU Soccer field for the first time since 2011. “We gave it our best,” said Coach Krista. “We had a shakey start, but the one goal woke us up. We played hard, and it was great.”

WAU started the game hot with Madeline Meija and Alexa Escobar, each scoring two goals in the first half. Also, in the first half, the Nittany Lions scored their only goal of the night. Meija opened the Shock scoring with a penalty kick at the 22:25 minute mark.  The Shock went on a 3-0 scoring run over 3 minutes to give WAU a 4-1 advantage at the half. Alexa Escobar scored at the 38:24 minute mark, Meija scored at the 38:05 minute mark, and Escobar scored again at the 41:24 minute mark.

The second half mirrored the first half, with Meija and Escobar scoring all of the Shock’s goals. However, Meija was quick to go on a scoring run, netting a goal only 1:04 into the second half. Meija netted her fourth goal of the day at the 75:23 minute mark giving the Shock the 6-1 advantage.  Escobar closed out a career-high night in the final 12-minutes of the game with a 3-0 run, scoring at the 78:04 minute mark, the 83:58 minute mark, and the 89:55 minute mark to give the Shock the 9-1 home opener victory.  “Felt great to be out here, especially on the turf,” said Coach Krista. “I’m ready for the rest of the season and excited to be here.”

Goalkeeper Elizabeth Okojie recorded three saves on the day.
