Washington Adventist University Students Shine at Journey to Joy Conference
Takoma Park, Md. — Junior Aguilar and Ali Bryan, senior and sophomore theology students from Washington Adventist University, embarked on an enriching summer experience from June 27 to August 3. The duo traveled to California to serve as Bible counselors and assistant evangelists at the “Journey to Joy” Bible Conference under the guidance of Dr. Emil Peeler, an adjunct professor in the Department of Religion.
Over five weeks, Aguilar and Bryan actively engaged in various conference activities, including door-to-door outreach, distributing flyers, organizing community service events, and leading Bible studies. They also participated in the conference’s administrative activities, gaining practical experience in evangelistic work.
The students received mentorship from prominent leaders in the Adventist community, including Elder Yolanda Angel Cohill, Elder Darrel Jackson,Dr. Craig Dossman, Pastor Gregory Johnson of Southgate SDA, Dr. Bulgin of Capitol City SDA, and Dr. Jeremiah Green, the conference’s children’s program coordinator. This diverse mentorship offered them insights into different aspects of ministry and evangelism.

The conference concluded with a significant impact: 24 individuals were welcomed into the fellowship of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 22 through baptism, and two through the profession of faith.
Reflecting on his experience, Aguilar shared, “With my time in California working for the Journey to Joy Bible Conference, I was immensely blessed by what I learned. Not only did I learn theory from seasoned soul winners, but I also put what they taught me into practice. It was hard and arduous work to perform in the Sacramento heat. However, I learned management, assertiveness, confidence, and how to get a decision for Christ. If I had the opportunity to do it all over again, I would. Finally, this work not only prepared me for the ministry but also made me excited for it.”
The Journey to Joy Bible Conference provided a platform for students to enhance their theological education with real-world application, reflecting Washington Adventist University’s commitment to hands-on learning and community engagement.
