Washington Adventist University (WAU) resumed its weekly convocation series on Wednesday, marking the first gathering of the spring semester after the university’s break. The event, held in the campus chapel, focused on reflection, worship, and community announcements, highlighting student-led mission work and the significance of service.
The convocation opened with an emphasis on the importance of March as Women’s History Month and Gender Equality Month. Speakers noted the opportunity to honor the achievements of women globally while advocating for inclusivity and human rights. The university also recognized March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, calling attention to efforts promoting understanding and support for individuals with developmental challenges.

Campus updates included information about the upcoming Service Day, scheduled for later in the semester, and a reminder for students to stay informed via official WAU communication channels. Additional announcements featured upcoming events such as Gateway worship services, student bake sales, and a seminar titled “Wokeness: Its Discontents,” hosted by the Religion Department.

There was a presentation by Adventist Colleges Abroad (ACA), which offers WAU students opportunities to study internationally in countries such as Spain, France, Italy, and South Korea. Students currently studying abroad were noted, and representatives encouraged others to explore future global education experiences.

A highlight of the gathering was the students who participated in WAU’s recent mission trip to Ethiopia sharing powerful testimonies, photos, and songs from their time abroad. They visited several foundations, hospitals, and care centers, including the Mary Joy Foundation, Sunshine Foundation, and an autism center, engaging with orphans, cancer patients, and underserved populations.

Students recounted emotional moments with children battling cancer, interactions that deeply impacted their perspective on life, gratitude, and service. They also witnessed the power of faith in action and were inspired to continue mission-driven work in the future. As part of their outreach, WAU students were challenged to raise funds to furnish a room in a local Ethiopian hospital in the university’s name.
In his closing remarks, university leadership praised the students’ commitment to service and encouraged the WAU community to embrace the theme of living beyond self, fostering a culture of compassion and global citizenship.
“Washington Adventist University is more than academics—it’s about living a life of purpose, mission, and service,” shared WAU Chaplain Jiwan Moon. “Let’s continue to be the light in the world.”
The convocation concluded with a worship segment, where students led the congregation in song and prayer, underscoring WAU’s dedication to spiritual growth and community impact.
