March 1 Application Deadline Nears for Child Care Workers Interested in Receiving Funds for College Tuition, Fees and Books

Takoma Park, Md. (January 18, 2017) Funding is available to cover tuition, fees and textbooks for eligible child care professionals who want to pursue an undergraduate degree in education at Washington Adventist University (WAU). Applications for the funding, provided by the Maryland State Child Care Career and Professional Development Fund, must be submitted by March 1, 2017. The funding will be available to approved applicants on July 1, 2017 to cover costs for the 2017-2018 school year.

Washington Adventist University was ranked among the top 30 “Best Small Colleges for a Teaching Degree” and it offers three bachelor’s programs in education: Liberal Studies: Early Childhood Care and EducationLiberal Studies: Early Childhood/Special Education; and Liberal Studies: Elementary/Special Education. The programs are offered in an accelerated evening format to accommodate working adults who seek to earn their degree faster.

In order to be eligible for the fund, applicants must first apply and be accepted to Washington Adventist University’s School of Graduate and Professional Studies. They must also:

  • Participate in the Maryland Child Care Credential Program at level two or higher;
  • Work at least 10 hours a week in a licensed child care center or be a registered family child care provider in Maryland;
  • Participate in professional development; and
  • Agree to complete the child care service requirement in Maryland after completion of the degree and/or withdrawal from the fund.

Students may be approved for continuing funds (based on availability) if they maintain a 2.5 GPA (grade point average) and continue to work in the child care field.

First-time applications for the Child Care Career and Professional Development Fund are processed on a first come, first served basis, so interested individuals are encouraged to contact the WAU School of Graduate and Professional Studies (SGPS) as soon as possible regarding their interest.
