Washington Adventist University Sees an Increase in Spiritual Engagement Post W.I.S.E. Week

TAKOMA PARK, MD – During the final week of September, Washington Adventist University (WAU) observed its W.I.S.E. Week, an initiative signifying “Week In Spiritual Emphasis.” Brought on by the dynamic preaching of Pastor Ramon Griffith an alumnus of Washington Adventist University. The outcome was notably positive, with students showing increased interest in spiritual activities.

Throughout the week, eight individuals stepped forward expressing a desire for prayer, and another five registered their interest in pursuing Bible studies. The week’s events resonated deeply with many attendees, leading to the chaplain office initiating a novel approach to Bible studies: peer-to-peer engagement.

This unique approach was developed following discussions with the Student Association Religious Vice President, Tiara Best. Together, they plan to launch “Table Talk” sessions aimed at those keen on being a part of the Bible study group. The decision to adopt this methodology was rooted in the belief that students often find it more relatable and comfortable discussing religious and spiritual topics with their peers. “I just always want to emphasize the inclusivity of Table Talk,” says Best, for churched and unchurched students. A place to ask questions and verbalize concerns about life and spirituality.”

Every individual who signed up was approached and given an opportunity to converse about their spiritual journey. Chaplain Paul Graham personally took the time to pray with each of them, emphasizing the importance of nurturing spiritual awareness among both the churched and the unchurched students.

Speaking about the overarching aim of the initiative, Chaplain Graham said, “Baptism is not the goal; it’s the byproduct of the goal. To generate the awareness of Christ in the lives of students is paramount.”

The proactive steps taken by the university during W.I.S.E. Week and its aftermath have set a promising trajectory for increased spiritual emphasis and engagement among the student community. WAU remains committed to fostering a spiritual environment where students can explore, grow, and deepen their relationship with Christ.
