WAU Highlights Cultural Diversity on Campus

Written by: Dr. Beulah Manuel, Director of the International Student Program

Washington Adventist University (WAU) celebrates its diverse and inclusive campus environment, with students from 55 countries across five continents calling the university their “second home.” Entering Wilkinson Hall, visitors are greeted by a vibrant display of flags, each representing WAU’s international community.

This academic year, WAU’s largest international student populations hail from India, Brazil, Mexico, Nigeria, El Salvador, Italy, the United Kingdom, Zimbabwe, Venezuela, Colombia, and Jamaica, as well as its first student from Bhutan. The top five academic programs with the highest number of international students are Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Counseling Psychology, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and Nursing.

WAU values the foundation of mutual respect, equity, and appreciation for cultural differences, fostering an inclusive environment. Instead of a “melting pot,” WAU embraces a “salad bowl” model, where diverse identities and perspectives enrich the academic, social, and spiritual atmosphere for all.

“WAU values its diversity and gains strength in the knowledge, skills, and perspectives shared by students who come to us from countries around the world,” said Dr. Weymouth Spence, University President. “We enjoy an environment of respect among our students, faculty, and staff, and the larger WAU community. We maintain it by extending trust and treating each other with kindness, dignity, and fairness. Everyone on this campus is valued and appreciated, including those who hold citizenship elsewhere in the world.”

The International Student Club, “Global Thinkers,” provides a platform to bring together the campus community through events and activities that celebrate global cultures. The club’s motto, “To Meet, To Chat and To Impact,” reflects the mission of WAU to connect students with each other and the world.

Below are some reflections from WAU’s international students:

“I’m on the soccer team; we are like a family! We are also mostly international students,” said a junior in Computer Science.

“I love the diversity on campus and engaging with everyone,” said a graduate student in Healthcare Administration.

“I’ve made so many friends from different countries despite being here for a short time,” shared a Counseling Psychology graduate student.

“From day one, I felt welcomed and enjoyed learning about other cultures,” said a freshman Nursing student.

“Everyone is super friendly at WAU, and campus events help me connect with others,” said an MBA student.

“As international students, we make up a significant part of the student body. We contribute a lot, and overall, this is a welcoming and safe campus for all,” said a sophomore in Theology.

“We are proud of who we are and where we come from – WAU is a welcoming place,” said a freshman in Business Administration.

By prioritizing cultural and national diversity, Washington Adventist University enriches the educational experience, preparing students to become honorable global citizens. This mission of inclusion and celebration of diversity is central to WAU’s identity.
