Academic Administration
The Academic Administration at Washington Adventist University currently operates under the leadership of Provost Susan G. Hornshaw, Ph.D
Falling under the umbrella of Academic Administration are all academic departments and their faculty, the Admissions Office, the Center for Learning Resources, Insitutional Research, the Records Office, and Weis Library.
The department produces the Academic Bulletin, the Facts and Figures booklet, and a variety of other publications relating to academic life and college accreditation.
Outstanding Students Recognized for Contributions
The Office of Student Life and Retention held the annual Student Recognition Convocation on April 13 in Sligo Church. The convocation was an opportunity for the administration to convey their thanks and appreciation to the students of WAU who have gone above and beyond their duties as student workers.
The event was entitled “Expect Respect” and included an address by Senior Minister Joey Pollom of the Manassas Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
Pranitha Fielder, Youth Pastor at Sligo Church gave the pastoral greeting and Invocation to begin and WAU President Dr. Weymouth Spence gave the welcome.
Vice President for Student Life, A. Jean Warden, spoke of the benefit the University gains by having students who excel in their duties both as scholars and workers. Tyler Bissel on violin and Christopher Price on piano performed Our Great Savior by Rowland Pritchard, afterwhich Pastor Pollom took the stage.
Pastor Pollom compared the dedicated students of WAU to pearls being fashioned into beautiful necklaces. The process is tough and unforgiving but it eventually produces things of beauty. This is the process of gaining respect and is part of every hardworking student’s growth experience at WAU.
The moment everyone had been waiting for arrived, as the various University departments called students to the stage to receive their awards. The faculty, staff, and students shared a moment of recognition for the years work.
Beulah Manuel, Associate Director for the Center for Learning Resources gave the benediction to conclude the ceremony.
Registration for Fall 2011 Continues
- The Fall 2011 schedule is available through your advisor or online through WebAdvisor.
- ADVISOR APPROVAL IS REQUIRED BEFORE YOU CAN REGISTER ONLINE
- NEW: E-Advising available. See your advisor or contact him/her by email
- Take the necessary steps to remove any holds on your status
- Register via WebAdvisor : go to webadvisor.wau.edu OR wau.edu, click on Quick Links then click on WebAdvisor
- Be sure you are financially cleared
Students who missed the pre-registration period will still be allowed to register without penalty. However, if students delay registration until the beginning of the Fall semester, they will face long lines for both registration and financial clearance. This also puts a heavy burden on the faculty and staff that must accommodate needed latecomers. When students register early, academic administration will know which classes are in demand and then make arrangements for students registering for those classes. When students register late, academic administration must scramble to provide the best possible setup for students.Registration and Financial Clearance are two separate processes
Academic administration wants to remind students that registration is separate from the financial clearance process. Students must be financially cleared before the registration process is complete. Please visit Student Financial Services and complete financial clearance. This will ensure an easy entry into Fall classes.
E-Advising now available through WebAdvisor
It is now possible to work with your academic advisors electronically through WebAdvisor. Your advisor will decide whether you can be advised electronically or if a face-to-face- meeting will be required. Students will not be allowed to register for classes without the approval of their advisors. This is to ensure that students are registering for the right classes and fulfilling major requirements efficiently.
Exemplary Leadership Society Inducts Nine WAU Student Leaders
Nine WAU student leaders were inducted into the Exemplary Leadership Society on February 9, 2011 before a large gathering of proud and supportive faculty and staff members, family, and friends.

The Exemplary Leadership Society is the precursor to Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), a national leadership honor society. Interim Provost and longtime ODK member Dr. Ralph Johnson knew when he came to WAU last September that he wanted to work to bring a chapter of ODK to our campus. “Everything that ODK stands for fits perfectly with Washington Adventist University’s quest for excellence in all areas,” commented Johnson. As described in the ODK manual, “ODK places emphasis on the development of the whole person, both as a present member of the university community and as a prospective contributor to a better society. The Society believes that while good scholarship and intellectual development are the chief objectives of the college years, it is not enough to be merely a ‘scholar;’ other indispensable qualities must also be cultivated. Students and faculty members must understand that the self is a composite of the hand, the heart, the spirit and the mind. ODK believes that the search for truth, the promotion of good will, the development of consideration, understanding, responsibility, honor and good taste, are important lessons and personal qualities that one learns and develops through an integrated program of academic and co-curricular education. Membership is as such an obligation and responsibility in citizenship as it is a mark of highest distinction and honor.”
Each of the nine inductees submitted an application based on the criteria for membership in ODK: demonstration of exemplary character, responsible leadership and service in campus or community life, superior scholarship, genuine fellowship, and consecration to democratic ideals. All have completed at least one full semester at WAU, earned at least 60 credit hours, and maintained at least a 3.50* cumulative GPA. In addition, each inductee has achieved special distinction in at least one of the following categories: Athletics, Journalism (speech, mass media), Creative/performing arts, Campus or community service (social, religious activities and campus government), and Scholarship.
The new Exemplary Leadership Society members will assist in developing the petition to ODK to establish a chapter at WAU. Calls for applications will be announced later this semester. Congratulations to each one of these outstanding student leaders!
