Dean receives Lifetime Achievement Award
Washington Adventist University’s Dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences, Dr. Gaspar Colon, and his wife Dr. May-Ellen Colon recently received the highest North American Division award for excellence in family life work. The NAD Department of Family Ministries presented them with the 2009 Distinguished Service Award during the annual Family Life Celebration weekend at Andrews University, held June 17-18, 2009.
The Colon’s active involvement in family ministries started nearly 30 years ago in Hartford, Conn. One of Gaspar’s Catholic Bible study students insisted he and May-Ellen attend a Marriage Encounter weekend seminar. A short time later, the couple attended an intense training seminar, which prepared them to conduct marriage enrichment weekends throughout their church district.
“We’ve had a lot of fun with it,” Colon says. “And actually we’re into it more because we work on our own marriage. Everything we do in marriage seminars is for us primarily. Then we share.”
Their years of service also include work in pastoral ministry and public health. While stationed in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, West Africa, they co-directed the Africa-Indian Ocean Division Department of Family Ministries. They also founded and led the Euro-Asian Family Life Department during their time in Moscow, Russia.
In addition to his duties as Dean, Gaspar is a theology professor and directs of the Center for Metropolitan Ministry at Washington Adventist University. May-Ellen is assistant director of General Conference Sabbath School and Personal Ministries and directs Adventist Community Services International.
The Colons still hold marriage enrichment seminars when both opportunity and time allow. Recently, they helped form an interdenominational partnership between their home church and other community churches to promote healthy family relationships and family life.

The department’s goal is to graduate students who combine a high degree of technical competence and preparedness to assume positions of interest and responsibility with a well rounded and ethical approach to people, work, and life.

Department of Psychology
The Department of Psychology offers two four-year curricula leading to the Bachelor of Arts in General Psychology and the Bachelor of Science degree in Counseling Psychology. The department also offers two Master of Arts degree programs. One M.A. degree in Professional Counseling Psychology and the other M.A. degree is offered in Counseling Psychology. Both degree programs are offered through the School of Graduate and Professional Studies at WAU. Each course is built on the basic philosophy that the “true principles of psychology are found in the Holy Scriptures (1MCP 10.1).”
The bachelor’s degree in psychology provides adequate preparation for graduate school. For professional practice in the field, additional psychology courses in graduate school may be required. Recent developments indicate that an undergraduate degree in psychology also makes a sound basis for paraprofessional, community, and public affairs programs. The psychology student is advised to become a student member of American Psychological Association and to study The Psychology Major and Career Opportunities for Psychologists published by that organization.

Department of Education
Entrance to the Professional Education Program and Internship Requirements
Education students are reminded of the importance of applying for admission to the Professional Education Program prior to enrolling in any of the upper level courses. It is important to keep the following deadlines in mind:

By the end of the sophomore year students should have taken and passed the Praxis I test and passed with a score of 527. Please note that if you have a score of 1000 prior to 1995 or 1100 after 1995 on the SAT, or an ACT score of 24, you will not need to take the Praxis I test. Praxis preparation courses are available each semester to prepare students to successfully complete this requirement. Please speak with your advisor about the schedule.

The professional education sequence is designed to provide experiences that prepare educators for early childhood, elementary and secondary school settings. The program provides a broadbased liberal arts foundation and practical applications that foster the holistic development of students who are liberally educated and professionally prepared.Entrance to the Professional Education Program and Internship Requirements
Programs in education prepare students for teaching careers in early childhood (Pre-K - 3), elementary (K-6), and secondary education (K-12) settings as well as for educational work in trades and industries. With appropriate training and/or licensing, students may enter teaching careers or find positions in curriculum development, pupil personnel (particularly residence hall deaning), evaluation and educational administration. Graduates may also serve as church educators directing religious educational programs and Bible instruction in local church settings. Washington Adventist University offers liberal studies degrees that emphasize special education in the elementary and early childhood programs. This focus prepares graduates to fulfill roles in various teaching and co-teaching settings, addressing diverse learning needs.
The programs are designed for those interested in working with children and/or youth in childcare settings, preschools, before and after care programs, vocational training, or youth centers, and secondary schools.

The degree programs are accredited by NAD and MSDE and lead to teacher certification. Currently Elementary/Special Education and Early Childhood/Special Education Programs are also offered through the School of Graduate and Professional Studies and address the needs of Paraprofessional Educators desiring to earn a Bachelors degree in preparation to enter their own classrooms for fulltime practice.
