Washington Adventist University Appoints Dr. Leonardo Martins as Chair of Health, Wellness, and Physical Education

TAKOMA PARK, Md. (AP) — Washington Adventist University (WAU) is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Leonardo Martins, affectionately known as “Leo,” as the new Chair of the Department of Health, Wellness, and Physical Education (HWPE). Originally from Brazil, Dr. Martins brings over two decades of experience in physical education and a passion for promoting health and wellness.

Dr. Martins has been a faculty member at the Adventist University of São Paulo since 1999 and has served as Chair of the Physical Education Department there since 2006. His leadership and dedication to the field have earned him a reputation for excellence in education and a commitment to student success.

He is married to Marcia Martins, a dietitian with a doctorate in Food Science, and together they have two accomplished children. Their son, Lucas, holds a doctoral degree in Violin Performance from the University of Nevada, and their daughter, Jacque, is a physician currently completing her medical residency in Georgia.

In addition to his academic and professional achievements, Dr. Martins is passionate about running and triathlons. He has participated in prestigious events such as the Ironman, the R2R2R Grand Canyon, and several ultramarathons. Notably, he enjoys running with visually impaired athletes, reflecting his commitment to inclusivity and community involvement.

As he steps into his new role at WAU, Dr. Martins is eager to enhance the university’s HWPE programs and inspire students to embrace healthy, active lifestyles. His experience and enthusiasm for physical education and wellness make him a valuable addition to the WAU family.
