Mock Trial Team Has a Split Decision

images WAU’s Mock Trial team had mixed success when they took on Johns Hopkins University on Sunday February 6. The team tried the fictional case of Davis v Happyland on the campus of Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and played the part of both the plaintiff and the defendant in separate trials.

Academy Musicians in Town for Columbia Union Chorale Festival

DSC_0102edited The Department of Music is hosting the Columbia Union Chorale Festival this week. Academy musicians from Takoma, Spencerville, Highland View, Blue Mountain, Spring Valley, and Fletcher Academies will join with WAU’s own Columbia Collegiate Choral and New England Youth Ensemble.

Week of Spiritual Emphasis: By the Students, For the Students

January 24 – 29 has been designated as Week in Spiritual Emphasis. The Week will include daily convocation at 11:15 am and conclude with a Sabbath morning program. The theme for the week is Paradigm Shift; Moving to Higher Ground.

This Week inf Spiritual Emphasis is unique for it is a yearly opportunity for the University community to hear students, and students alone, speak to the congregation. This is part of Vice-President of Ministry, Dr. Baraka Muganda’s plan to help “empower young people to have a part in sharing the Good News to colleagues.”

Opening Convocation 2011: Experiencing Higher Ground

The Opening Convocation of 2011 was entitled Higher Ground and featured presentations that encouraged the WAU community to strive for excellence.

David Dickerson on horn and Dr. Mark DiPinto on piano, offered the prelude, Allegro, a composition by Joseph Haydn.  Dean of the School of Arts and Social Science, Dr. Gaspar Colon gave the Invocation and led the congregation in singing the opening hymn, Higher Ground, with accompaniment on organ by Music Department Chair, Dr. James Bingham.

Christmas Banquet goes Broadway

aaaaIMG_5041editededitedHolidays are about tradition, and this year’s WAU Christmas Banquet was no different with Lloyd Yutuc once again giving us his rendition of the 12 Days of Christmas. The Office of Student Life organized the annual event with a dinner theater theme entitled “Christmas on Broadway”

Attendees were first invited for to attend a 5:00 pm social in the Wilkinson Hall Lobby for cookies and drinks before being escorted to the Dining Hall for the feature presentation. Dean of Women, Adrienne Matthews, coordinated the program by working with on-campus music club, Rhapsody, to present the play while attendees enjoyed the delicious meal. Michael Patterson and Juliana Baioni, music majors and Rhapsody members were instrumental in the performance.
