January 24 – 29 has been designated as Week in Spiritual Emphasis. The Week will include daily convocation at 11:15 am and conclude with a Sabbath morning program. The theme for the week is Paradigm Shift; Moving to Higher Ground.

This Week inf Spiritual Emphasis is unique for it is a yearly opportunity for the University community to hear students, and students alone, speak to the congregation. This is part of Vice-President of Ministry, Dr. Baraka Muganda’s plan to help “empower young people to have a part in sharing the Good News to colleagues.”

The Opening Convocation of 2011 was entitled Higher Ground and featured presentations that encouraged the WAU community to strive for excellence.

David Dickerson on horn and Dr. Mark DiPinto on piano, offered the prelude, Allegro, a composition by Joseph Haydn.  Dean of the School of Arts and Social Science, Dr. Gaspar Colon gave the Invocation and led the congregation in singing the opening hymn, Higher Ground, with accompaniment on organ by Music Department Chair, Dr. James Bingham.

Holidays are about tradition, and this year’s WAU Christmas Banquet was no different with Lloyd Yutuc once again giving us his rendition of the 12 Days of Christmas. The Office of Student Life organized the annual event with a dinner theater theme entitled “Christmas on Broadway”

Attendees were first invited for to attend a 5:00 pm social in the Wilkinson Hall Lobby for cookies and drinks before being escorted to the Dining Hall for the feature presentation. Dean of Women, Adrienne Matthews, coordinated the program by working with on-campus music club, Rhapsody, to present the play while attendees enjoyed the delicious meal. Michael Patterson and Juliana Baioni, music majors and Rhapsody members were instrumental in the performance.

Student Life and Retention held WAU Health and Wellness Week in the Wilkinson Hall Lobby from November 15-18. The four-day event gave students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to become aware of their health through various tests, information videos, and discussions with event staff.

And the winners are… To date, just over 400 returning traditional (non-SGPS) students have completed the registration process for the Spring semester! Making way for the Virginia Gene Rittenhouse Music Center, opening Fall 2011, demolition began on the old Music Building on Tuesday, October 19, 2010.

Following recent organizational restructuring, Gerald L. Anderson, MGA, CPHIMS, PMP, has joined WAU’s administrative team as Senior Vice President for Operations.

Anderson is the owner and Chief Executive Officer of GRA Associates, LLC., a consulting firm offering services in Business Management, Healthcare Administration, Educational Administration, Educational Psychology, and Organizational Assessment.

The 2010-11 Fall enrollment numbers are in, and the news is more than good. WAU is experiencing enrollment not seen since 1990 with a headcount of 1,298. This is a 10.2% increase over 2009’s enrollment of 1,178. “This is a significant milestone for WAU,” says William Jackson, Vice President for Marketing & Recruiting. “Not only are our programs attracting incoming freshmen, but also transfer students from other institutions. Additionally we are retaining our own students at a better rate. It has taken a team effort with recruiting by Enrollment Management, faculty and staff, along with a campus wide emphasis on retention.”
