Washington Adventist University Associate Vice President for Institutional Research and Effectiveness, Janette Neufville, won the award for the fall 2012 Best Paper presented at the Maryland Association for Institutional Researchers (MdAIR) conference held on October 19, 2012 at Morgan State University.

The presentation, which was titled “Using Balanced Scorecards with a Focus on Benchmarking,” discussed the use of balanced scorecards, which are based on Kaplan and Norton’s measurement tool (early 90’s) advocating measurement of key performance indicators from four perspectives: financial, internal Processes, employee learning and growth and customer.

These indicators collectively measure the health of the organization, against established goals. 

Created in 2008, the emphasis for WAU’s balanced scorecard was on proving for each KPI a historical trend of four years. 

Washington Adventist University (WAU) Black Student Union Gospel Choir is the latest group to travel overseas on a mission to promote the University and expose others to its special mission as a faith-based institution.

The group of 24 students and three sponsors travelled to the West Indies from January 7 to 14 at the invitation the East Caribbean Conference Youth Ministries Director, Dayle Haynes.

The Department of Student Life has launched a new counseling program, designed to help the community address a range of issues that can impact students wellness and performance. The program will be managed by new campus counselor, Mrs. Jahmela Williams.

Williams, a licensed clinical counselor, received her undergraduate degree from Oakwood University and a Master of education in counseling from Bowie State University. She earned a second Masters in special education from Northcentral University. She has worked with youth in a variety of settings for more than 10 years.

On Washington Adventist University (WAU) Ministry Department’s “Cruise with a Purpose,” January 5-14, Brittany Bower proved the perfect example of Christian humility and compassion.

Moved by the plight of a young girl, who arrived at a mission event in the Dominican Republic without shoes, Brittany, a junior biology major from Baltimore, promptly removed hers and handed them to the teenager. She spent the rest of the afternoon in her socks until a group member loaned her a pair of size 13 flip-flops.

Washington Adventist University women’s basketball team, Lady Shock, is lending it’s time to the Office of Admissions assisting Krista Byrd, admissions counselor with data entry and other routine tasks in the office. Byrd is also athletic specialist and assistant women’s basketball coach.

Lady Shock has been assisting the team over several weeks, including during the Christmas break.

“We greatly appreciate their time and effort,” Byrd said. “They give generously and what they do does make a difference to our small office.”

A celebration for the life of John Konrad, Vice President and General Manager of Washington’s contemporary Christian music station, WGTS 91.9, will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday, January 12, at Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church, 7700 Carroll Avenue Takoma Park, MD 20912

Konrad, 43, died at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, January 2, after a short illness.
